“Brick by Brick is a group exhibition that examines the tedious ongoing process of working towards stability, healing, placemaking, and remembrance amidst the backdrop of our home in Brownsville, Texas, a place that is actively being built upon. Honoring, responding to, and building off the foundations set by those in pursuit of safety and comfort before us, the work in this show uses construction materials, architectural motifs, and tools that allude to physical labor through sculpture, installation, and photography. They are in conversation with materials and processes traditionally associated with domestic work, such as textiles and soft sculpture. These distinct forms of labor intermingle and blur throughout the show and are also explored through printmaking, animation, video, and painting. These methods demonstrate that all forms of labor are valuable, all forms of labor are equal, and all types of labor belong to all people in the pursuit of community-building. This exhibition recognizes this labor and these pursuits of survival as the preservation of love and freedom. The title of the exhibition, ‘Brick by Brick’, not only reflects the artists’ collective effort but also their personal journeys. This exhibition is a culmination of the Flower Shop Art Residency (October 2023 & March 2024) and the Flower Buds 956 Residency Program (April 2024). Their work is a testament to how personal histories shape our existence and the steps we take to house and safeguard these cherished moments, crafted with care, brick by brick.”
