From the Art Museum of South Texas:

“The Art Museum of South Texas (AMST) announces Studio Practice, the 8th exhibition in the biennial Target Texas series which began in 2008. Target Texas: Studio Practice is a group exhibition showcasing the art of six Texas-based artists. A member reception will be held Thursday September 12, from 5:30-7:00pm. The exhibition will open to the public Friday, September 13.

Target Texas: Studio Practice is a group exhibition that brings a statewide view of living artists to Corpus Christi. Artists represented in the exhibition include David Caton, Jenelle Esparza, Tommy Fitzpatrick, Michael Kennaugh, Kermit Oliver, and Elena Rodz.

“One of the greatest privileges of curating an art exhibition such as this is having the opportunity to talk with artists and to see their work with them,” said Deborah Fullerton, curator of exhibitions at AMST. “It is partly for this reason that we are attempting to ‘pull the curtain back’ and view video elements so that everyone has an opportunity to experience another aspect to appreciate the work they create.”

Visitors can expect to see abridged video elements throughout the exhibition. Videographer Derrick Perrin travelled throughout Texas to interview each artist (except for Oliver) within their studios. Christopher Scott’s documentary on Kermit Oliver will be screened at AMST, at a later date expected in 2025. Formal announcement to follow.

An Art Unboxed will kick off Target Texas: Studio Practice, Friday September 13, 12-2pm. Art Unboxed is AMST’s lecture and lunch series. Speakers will include five of the six artists represented in the exhibition: David, Elena, Jenelle, Michael, and Tommy. Those interested in enjoying a box lunch by Water Street Catering must pre-register for the event here. Deadline to reserve lunch is Monday, September 9 by 4pm. The program is open for all to attend, free for members, cost of admission for non-members.

Hosting Target Texas: Studio Practice at the Art Museum of South Texas is a significant opportunity to celebrate the incredible diversity and creativity of artists from across the state,” explained Sara S. Morgan, director at AMST. “This exhibition brings fresh perspectives and innovative works to our community and strengthens our connection to the broader Texas art scene.”

Two exhibitions will be on view which help tell the full story of Target Texas: Studio PracticeADJACENCY: In and Between Selections from the Collection and Kermit Oliver: Designing for Hermès.

Target Texas: Studio Practice will remain on view through January 26, 2025.
